Excessive voltage in the Intelligent Power Module (IPM) within the inverter may cause the hybrid system to shut down, causing the vehicle to stall while being driven. Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update for the hybrid system. If the vehicle has experienced an inverter failure with certain hybrid system faults related to this condition, the inverter assembly will be repaired or replaced, prior to software update. On the afternoon of September 7, 2017, I took the car to the
dealership. I told the dealership foreman, Mike Helm, what had occurred
with the car and let him know that I do not feel safe driving the car. I
also told him that there are other allegations of unexpected sudden
acceleration in reverse for the Toyota Prius found on the NHTSA database
and on other internet sites. I requested that the Event Data Recorder
(EDR) data analysis be performed on my car.
Mike Helm informed me that the Toyota field technician representative
(FTR) is the only one authorized to evaluate the EDR data. I received
a rental car because my car is still under warranty (approx. 22,290 miles).
I returned to the dealership on September 11, 2017, to check
on the status of my car. I spoke with Dan Eaton/Service Advisor, who
informed me that they are still waiting for the Toyota FTR and do not know
when he will be at their dealership.

I have also informed my insurer, Keith Hall/State Farm Insurance, of
the issue. Additionally, on September 15, 2017, I submitted a letter to
NHTSA Enforcement and enclosed other allegations of unexpected sudden
acceleration/lunge in reverse that can be found on the internet (Prius
Chat) and the NHTSA database. I do believe that this is an unresolved
safety issue that has resulted in collisions. I believe that the incident
reports on the NHTSA database are likely only a small subset of actual
incidents reported. This leads me to the question of whether auto
dealerships and/or the manufacturer (via customer service center calls)
are required by law to report such allegations to NHTSA. Is there such a
reporting obligation similar to those required by Federal and state laws
for other consumer products (e.g. allegations of adverse incident effect
reporting obligations for disinfectants)?

Finally, on September 28, 2017, the Toyota field representative/technical services admin.,
Paul Blomdal, ran the EDR diagnostics. Neither the field representative nor the dealership
service foreman were able to explain the malfunction. They told me that I could take
my car because they found nothing wrong with it. I reiterated to them that I did not
feel safe driving it and took their shuttle service home. My car is still at the dealership.
I have asked them if they would allow me to trade it in for another car. I have reservations
about this, but do not know what my alternatives are at this point. They have agreed
and are quoting a \"Kelley Blue Book Auction Breakdown\" for the value that is considerably
lower than the purchase price. I have test-driven a few cars to purchase as a replacement.
I believe that their goal is to make a sizable profit from the fact that they know I will not drive
The malfunctioning Prius that I purchased.
