2004-04-15	LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH	CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES HAVE A CHILD PROTECTION LOCK (CPL) SYSTEM ON BOTH OF THE REAR SIDE DOORS. WHEN AN OPERATOR OF THE VEHICLE CLOSES THE DOOR VERY HARD WITH THE CPL LEVER SET TO THE LOCK POSITION, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE LEVER MAY CONTACT THE BODY PANEL, CAUSING THE CPL LEVER TO MOVE INTO THE UNLOCK POSITION. Remedy: DEALERS WILL SHORTEN THE CPL LEVER. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MAY 7, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.
2002-12-17	WHEELS	ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH FIVE FACTORY ALLOY WHEELS (MODEL 6934 AND 6936), WITH FACTORY LLAT, AND WITH PORT INSTALLED WR4, FOUR ALLOY WHEEL UPGRADE PROCESSED AT THE JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA PORT AND DISTRIBUTED BY SOUTHEAST TOYOTA DISTRIBUTORS IN THE STATES OF ALABAMA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, NORTH AND SOUTH CAROLINA, WHEN THE VEHICLES WERE PROCESSED AT THE PORT, AN ALLOY TIRE/WHEEL UPGRADE WAS INSTALLED. THE UPGRADE INCLUDED 4 ALLOY WHEELS. THE ORIGINAL SPARE TIRE/ALLOY WHEEL WAS NOT CHANGED. THE SPARE TIRE REQUIRES THE USE OF A DIFFERENT STYLE OF WHEEL NUT TO ATTACH IT TO THE VEHICLE. Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH DIFFERENT STYLE LUG NUTS, A WARNING LABEL FOR THE SPARE RE/ALLOY WHEEL, AND AN OWNER’S MANUAL ADDENDUM.

Engine seizure as a result of oil sludge, somehow my fault even with receipts for 8 synthetic oil changes. I was declined warranty coverage from Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc on 05/31/07. In addition to the repair costs of $9933.97 I incurred out-of town expenses of $1901.41. I am hoping you will help me take care of this problem. Ten days after a Toyota certified mechanic changed my oil & filters, my car engine seized as a result of lack of oil. I was on the highway back towards Colorado after a drive to San Francisco, CA (where my vehicle was parked in a garage most of the time) when my engine started making a loud rattle. Just as I pulled over, a poof of smoke came out from under the hood, and the car engine quit. A Nevada State Patroller tried to help me, finally dispatching for a flatbed tow truck. After delivering my vehicle to the Reno Toyota Dealership on 04/27/07, initial diagnosis by Rolando, my service advisor, on 05/01/07 was that the removed valve covers showed some build-up of sludge, but not an excessive amount. Whether the engine seizure happened because of lack of maintenance or lack of oil is still a mystery to me, as my service records found so far show responsible care and attention, especially considering the quality reputation that Toyota engines have. I keep my vehicle garaged year round, choose synthetic oil and professional mechanics, and always carry wiper fluid, oil, tire pressure gages and cleaning products for both inside and outside of the vehicle. I take pride in always having a well-maintained and clean car. Never during my trip did my oil light come on, so when I was tutoring my teenager on smart highway driving and care for our vehicle, I explained that normally we would check the oil but it was unnecessary because we just had the oil changed 8 days earlier. I drive 4000+ miles annually on summer vacations as well as considerable in-state miles, and have never had engine problems. I am very conscientious about engine oil care. I chose a Toyota for my vehicle purchase because of test performance results, design and reputation for service. My perception is that with a Toyota product, you pay a premium but that also you get a product that is built to last. I purchased this vehicle on 04/24/03, and now I am being told that this engine seized at 53,000 miles as a result of sludge buildup, something that oil changes & filters do not improve. Is this a result of newer engines built so tight that there is less tolerance for oil buildup? Something does not seem quite right to me with this whole series of events. It is not obvious to me as to the cause of engine failure. Did the Toyota mechanic actually refill all the oil during the last change? Do you expect average, non-mechanical customers to understand blow-by vapor implications, or the viscosity differences of synthetic vs. regular oil? After choosing a superior oil product (at three times the price of the regular alternative) for the life of his vehicle as well as the last oil change, I was confident that my vehicle was in top shape. I was not told otherwise as I discussed immediate plans for a driving trip. Currently this vehicle is covered under the 5yr/60,000 mile warranty. With receipts for eight synthetic oil changes found so far done within 51,000 miles, I have provided a responsible service record, an average of 6375 miles, which justifies coverage under your warranty.
