I would like to know if my car recalls were fixed? if not how do I get them repaired

Head gasket and Manifold gaskets leaks Power window track and frame fell apart

sept. 2003 window off track and would not go up,this was on the left side.june 2006 the same thing happen to the right side. It appears no window guides was used at the factory.The dealer said it was caused by using the window too much.That’s bull, it’s in storage 6mos. of the year.aug. 2004 ignition lock cylinder shorted out.

Security Passlock is a defective system which decides to activate when and where ever it feels like. When, for whatever reason, your car tries to turn over but will not start, you must turn it off, then turn the key to the on position for 10 minutes. This seems like eternity to wait for the blinking red security light to shut off. You then proceed to start it again with no problem. This override process is mentioned in the owner\’s manual, unfortunately, I had it towed back home then discovered how to override this annoying and unnecessary feature. This could be dangerous if the security system activates in a parking lot late at night. GM wants to charge customers $500 for a defective computer chip. A family member who also owned a 2002 Grand Am encountered the same malfunction, had it towed to the dealer and paid $500! The dealer will not guarantee that this may solve the problem. They now drive a Toyota Avalon. It should be the owners choice to install a security system, by the way, who would want to steal a Grand Am.

On June 17 2005 my daughter Christa Brooks hit the flat side of a 1985 Buick LeSabre 4 door that ran a yield sign in Lagrange Texas. The speed of the 2002 Grand Am was 25 to 30 mph.There was a witness passenger at the time of the accident. No airbag deployed on driver or passenger. The passenger was not injured. Christa Brooks was injured.1. Diagnosed with cervical injury hyperextensionflexion or the laymen term [whiplash] this a positive diagnoses as of to date. Christa is scheduled for an MRI of her total spine due to her health condition has degraded. Mri wed July 13-2005.2. Both knees were also injured and an MRI will be scheduled after the MRI of spine including the cervical.No diagnoses has been given on knees and the full extent of Christa Brooks injuries have been determined. General Motors was contacted at the recommendation of GM body shop. An independent investigator was contacted to do a full test and diagnostic on the Pontiac air bag system. The testing was completed. On 7-7-05 I received a call from GM rep Cheryl Danzvey 1-800-231-1841 ext. 57275 claim # 1-344 169 768. GM states that there is nothing wrong with the air bag system and she was going to close the case. I requested all documentation from the investigator. Cheryl states she will only send the computer print out from car. Cheryl states that is normal for the air bag not to deploy at that speed of 30 mPH.

My wheel broke off while driving, had no steering and no brakes, not exactly sure what let go, was told covered under warranty and then after the car was fixed by the dealership the dealership said I had to pay, as this could not have happened. Company sided with dealership and said would have someone from the company meet with me and look into the matter but has not. I’ve been waiting since Nov02.

My problem consists of the paint coming off,(peeling off) on my car. The front bumper has a spot approx 1-2 inches and all I want is this spot touched up. I have recently heard that GM has adopted in 1993 the most comprehensive paint policy in the industry. I have owned all GM vehicles and I feel that GM should stand behind this policy. Your success in todays market depends on satisifed customers and the information that they provide to you. Awaiting your earliest reply.

I have had my 2002 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.4L engine checked out three times for a coolant leak. The coolant can be smelled from the engine compartment, and is visible on the transaxe/transmission at times. The dealership kept telling me there was nothign wrong and it was normal for the coolant to go low between oil changes. I finally took the car to an independent garage, where it is now, and they found the intake gasket leaking. I was told then that they had replaced numerous gaskets on the pontiacs with this engine. My car is still in the shop,and the bill is estimated to be around a thousand dollars. After speakign with several other Grand Am owners, I now know that they have all had to have the same repairs done. If every person that I know that has a Grand Am. .which would be ten or eleven, have had the same problem, why isn’t Pontiac fixing it? I found a technical service bulletin online regarding this matter and stating to replace the gasket and bolts with a different type, which means they know they have an issue, so why am I paying 1000 dollars for a repair when it is apparently a design issue?

2002 grand am with 42000 miles, I bought it with 28,000 and a 10,000 mile warranty, the timing chain broke and bent 2 valves, the dealer wants $6,800 to repair it, Ive talked to 4 mechanics who can’t believe this happened at 42,000 miles.

This is a second vehicle with very limited mileage, which is driven by my wife. The car was purchased new from a Pontiac dealer so I can verify mileage and that it was maintained. The first indication of a problem was while I was driving on the expressway the temperature gauge shot into the red zone. Fortunately, I was near an exit and able to pull off the road before car stalled out. Since I had already started to slow down I was able to control car and to get it stopped safely without having power steering and power brakes. Car was towed to a local mechanic who pressure test cooling system and informed me of the problem and told me that GM was aware of problem and that they might help with repair cost. GM insisted that vehicle be checked by one of their dealers before anything could be done. The GM dealer did verify the fact the intake manifold gasket cracked causing car to overheat, and stall out. This problem is a result of the anti-freeze GM uses, Dex Cool, which reacts with intake manifold gasket causing the gasket to break down. GM has issued a Service Bulletin #03-06-01-010, back in 2003 to its dealer, but did not notify vehicle owners. It seems when the manufacturer installs bad parts or incompatible parts/fluids like this, that they should offer a solution that is reasonable and except the responsibility at the very least.

I am the owner of a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT. Last year, I had an issue with my vehicle wherein a paint defect caused delamination of the clear coat on my rear bumper. This issue was documented and fixed without hesitation under my GM warranty. Now, in 2006, I am having the very same issue with the paint, however this time around my rear window.

I was diving down hwy 70 going to pick up my first delivery for the day when, i'm not sure how but the key came out of the on postion and fell out on floor, scared i was going to crash i hurriedly reached down and put it back in and noticed the security light had came on and within minutes it lost all power and shut off, luckily i am a good driver and didn't crash but manage to get off road safely. i'm so glad worse didn't happen. now i have no car and probably lost all 3 jobs i had.

Transmission is slightly slipping i have had to have the wheel hubs changed four times i'm only the second owner the first owner was 80 when the car was sold it has 122k on it and if something is not done i will be contacting my lawyers very soon

Hello, i'm not sure who to contact in regards to this, but i have a 2002 pontiac grand am and received a safety recall notice in the mail, (the ignition/security recall.) i brought my car to the dealership, only to discover they never fixed it and when i called to address them about it, they reassured me they did, and have had second and third parties, (mechanics,) look and they if fact, did not. as a result, i've invested so much money and am now in car-less, and am a widow with 4 children going to college full time online. i've tried to fix it myself and having other mechanics who don't specialize in this fix it. please any help or information would be appreciated. thank you for your time. *tr

My pontiac grand am se 4ds 3.4 liter engine 2002 has a problem with the security light keeps coming on & stays on & then when i shut it off & then get back in car to start it , it wouldn't start the security light flashes & i have to wait 10 minutes or for it to go out leaving the car in on position for 10 minutes or more every time i get in the car to start it but once i wait 10 minutes the light go's out & then start car the security light stays on again without flashing then when i get shut the car down & then start again the security light flashes again can't start the car again & this happens continuously non stop this happens every time i park my car at a shopping center or my parking spot at my condo. i tried everything to disconnect the battery under the hood for 20 minutes it resets but it starts all over again with the security light on when i start the car up then have to wait 10 minutes for the security light to stop flashing then restart it again after the stops flashing then it starts but security light comes back on again. then if i shut off i have to wait 10 minutes every time . what can be done about this problem please.

Takata recall transmission - shifts hard, went out with out any warning lights. was at a stop light when i tried to go, it wouldn't go past 10 mph and went all the way up to 4th rpm. power steering leaks bad.

I replaced the clock spring back in 2018 but the air bag light still on it has to be a airbag control module since i purchased my first car since 2011 it needs to be turned off

Since the day i purchased the car it’s had a strong gas odor that fills the inside of the car. it gets worse when you run the defrost and when the gas tank is on e. it’s an everyday strong gas odor and most of the time it’s everytime you drive it no matter how many times in one day or how long of a period at a time.

When trying to turn on my car it wont start and a security message turns on on dashboard.i always have to wait atleast 10 minutes for the security message to disappear,but lately it does it twice in a row causing me to wait 20-25 minites for the engine to turn on. also the car turns off while on parked position.

When i try to start the car the security light comes on keeping the car from starting so i have to turn the switch to the on postion and wait 10-15 minutes to get it to start and it's an on going thing .

My pontiac's ignition key has fallen out of the ignition on at least three separate occasions while i'm driving/turning. in addition to the key falling out of the ignition, the steering wheel becomes hard to steer and i have to use the emergency brake to stop. the most recent incident took place one day after my car was serviced at a local gm dealer in relation to the 14350 unintended ignition key rotation post card i received in the mail. i did call the gm dealer to report that the car was producing the same high risk issues and that i could come up there and show them this same problem while their staff is also in the car. i was told " we fixed the recall problem you must have another issue that is not covered under this recall." i am willing to record and upload video footage to youtube or a gm site that accepts videos so gm corporation can assess my issues remotely. thanks in advance

I have had my car since november 2014. i go into the mall for a few hours and come back out to start my car and the key would not turn in the ignition. i turned the steering wheel and everything else i could think of. still nothing... i have it towed to a gmc ( winegardner brandywine maryland).. they tell me i need a new ignition lock cylinder ( $851.00) because i can not afford that hefty repair i have it sent to my personal mechanic and the car turns on perfectly for him. i don't understand how a car can go a week and a half without turning on. multiple people tried the key and then the car turns on. i don't feel safe driving this car at all. after looking at recalls and other complaints this car is garbage. *tr

I was driving along i-90 east going through south dakota. the weather was bad and the road was icy and very slick. there was an 18 wheeler that rolled over on the road and i did not see it until it was too late. there were about 10 cars in back of the truck and i could not stop. i had a head on collision with the back end of a 1 ton truck. it did not do any damage to the truck but it completely totaled my car. i hit the windshield with my head , left arm and hand. i suffered serious injuries and my head hit the windshield and cracked it the size of a grapefruit before the air bags deployed. they did not deploy until after i was seriously injured which is bs. i was taken to the hospital and an xray of my head was never done. they took an xray of my arm and hand and said i had a contusion. my head was big and swollen and so was my arm and hand and i had headaches for a month and a half and i still don't feel very well since the accident. i tried to file a claim against gm for the defective air bags on the car and they wont do anything about it. the accident happened in sturgis sd and the state patrol determined that the driver at fault was the driver of the 18 wheeler truck. i got no compensation whatsoever from the accident and the tow company ended up stealing my car. *tr

I recently received a recall in the mail for my vehicle for the ignition switch recommending that i take it in to get it fixed as soon as possible free of charge. it explains that any added weight should be removed from key ring except car key. around this time last year, before the part had been recalled, i had multiple keys on my key ring, and the ignition switch went out, and i had to pay to have it replaced. seeing how this part has now been recalled, i would like some kind of refund for having to replace this part which in this recall notice says it would be fixed for free, if it had been caught in time before it had already broke. i believe i still have the receipt for it also. thank you *tr

I bought my 2002 grand am about a year ago. about a week after i bought it, the turn signals made a buzzing noise coming from behind the radio it seems. sometimes the signals work correctly. other times they blink too fast, too slow, make a buzzing noise with no blinking or they buzz and blink. this is highly annoying. i have already gotten a ticket for failing to use my turn signal. it just buzzed with no blinking and when i went to prove it to the officer that there was a problem with them, it worked perfectly fine! how convenient! also, sometimes when i go to start my car it wont turn over or crank. i've noticed the security light comes on around the time this happens. i have to leave my key on the on position for 15 mins and then it will start. from the research i've done this is a pass lock security feature which shuts down the fuel system. *js

In reference to nhtsa action number pe05055 (recall 03v327), turn signal/hazard switch policy, gm was to update the special policy to cover vehicles not covered under recall 03v327, for a no cost replacement. letters to owners were supposed to go out june 2006. after contacting a local gm/pontiac dealer, i was told that the multi-function switch/turn signal and hazard switch was not covered under any special policy or recall. however, after researching this issue online it is clear that the hazard switch is not the main problem, it is the multi-function switch. even if they had replaced a hazard switch it would not have fixed the issue, which is contaminated grease that had bridged the contacts of the multi-function switch. this is a serious safety issue and needs to be addressed immediately by gm/pontiac. *tr

I was parked at a shopping center. i started the car, put my foot on the brake pedal to shift into reverse and the brake pedal went to the floor. i checked under the car and it appeared to have leaked brake fluid from the brake line. since i still had the parking brake and a little of the rear brakes, i limped the car to a garage. when i stepped on the pedal to stop, i had no brakes at all. upon checking, the other brake line had burst also. i had it checked and confirmed by the mechanic that both brake lines had burst. i called the gm dealer and was told there was no recalls and that any repair would be at my expense. i called gm, explained what had happened and what was wrong and was told that there were no recalls and the car was out of warranty and that they would provide no assistance. i explained that this is extremely dangerous. the car suddenly had no brakes because the brake lines had burst. it could have caused a severe accident and injury or death if i had been on the highway or had to make a sudden stop. i had purchased the car new, had the brakes serviced and there was never any indication of a problem. the vehicle was never in an accident or had any other prior damage. *tr

I had just gotten off and exit ramp and was getting on the interstate. when my car got up to 40 mph, it bogged down and down shift. i removed my foot from the gas pedal and let it get down to 30 mph, and applied my foot on the gas pedal again. this time when it got to 40 mph, it bogged down the only difference in the first time, it jerked. when i got off the interstate, i pulled into a parking lot and let the vehicle cool down for about 30 minutes, i started the car, but now it would not go into reverse or drive 1. i had to push the vehicle out of the parking spot, when i put it into drive, it went with easy. i noticed that the vehicle was not changing out like normal and the rpm gauge read 2500 rpm at 50 mph. this has never happen before december 15th. i would love to know what is going on with my vehicle. *tr

A surprise storm hit on i-4 westbound in orlando, fl. i was driving at about 45 miles per hour. the roads got wet very quickly and traffic backed up fast. as i hit the brakes with force to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me, the abs light came on as did the traction control light and the service vehicle soon light, the car seemed to have a power drainage/loss for a split second. at this moment, with how hard i hit the brakes, the car slid, the abs system did not engage and i had to release the brakes in order to get some traction and without warning swerve into the driving lane to the immediate right of the lane i was in so not to hit the vehicle directly in front of me. i was able to avoid an accident but that still does not fix nor does is change the fact that something went wrong and a vital piece of equipment seized to function. i have searched online for an answer for this and i am not the only one dealing with this. this is unsafe and the experience was very scary. nobody should have to go through that kind of issue nor should feel that scared in their lives. *tr

Ongoing problems with the security passlock system. security light comes on and within the next few times starting the vehicle it will not start. spent a lot of money over the years at gm authorized dealerships attempting to fix the problem. gm mechanics do not know how resolve the problem and they tell you the fix is replacing the ignition lock sensor, have the body control module reprogrammed, etc and they are just guessing and wasting my money. a quick internet search on this problem shows an unbelievable amount of "hits" and so many other vehicle owners are experiencing the same problem. it is frustrating that gm offers no solution to a very common problem that ultimately is a safety issue. this is a safety issue if the vehicle owner cannot start their vehicle and they are stranded in the middle of nowhere, extremely cold weather, a bad neighborhood, etc. *tr

My car started to stall out on me as i was crossing a very busy highway. i barely managed to get over to the other end and pull over before the car died completely. the battery light came on as the car stalled out. after trying to restart the car a few times, the key would turn and it would sound like it would try to start the engine, but never enough power to get it going. after having the car sit in idle for half an hour, waiting for a tow truck to get there, the car would make a clicking sound when the key is turned, but it wouldn't start. also, the security light stays on when the key is turned to "on". so far i have replaced the battery thinking that was the problem, checked all the fuses, fuel pumps, got a new alternator, and new oil pressure sensor. this seems to be a very common problem that has to do with security bypass in pontiacs. gm customer service wasn't at all helpful. i understand they will not do a recall because this common issue is not considered to be a safety issue, but in my case, the car died on me as i was crossing a busy highway, and i could've easily cause an accident. i'm sure my case that involved safety is not an isolated one. *tr

I live in tidewater virginia. very busy highways. i had just left my home. first stop sign at the end of my street. indicated a right turn and no blinker came on. through my entire trip no blinkers came on. very scary. it does work when it wants to,but you don't know when. lately it has gotten much more frequent. i pound above my radio, which is were the relay/switch is located i can usually get it to work. still after learning of this info. it disturbs me very much.

Sometimes but not always the security light will come on. when you turn the car off, when you go to restart it the car will not turn over. all the lights are fine i had the alternator and battery checked, they were fine. i tried to jump the starter from the battery and that wouldn't work. after loading the car on the trailer and bringing it home i tried to start the car one last time to drive it off the trailer and it started just fine. i shut it off and tried again and it works normal. approximately one month later i was on my way to close on my house leaving the bank the car wouldn't start. the next day i started looking online about 2002 grand am gt wont start and got many results. they say to solve the problem leave the key on acc for 10 min. and the passlock security system will reset. i also read that if you have it replaced that it will still do the same thing. it has since happened to me again all within 3 months and i tried the 10 min. acc trick and it worked. but that doesn't mean anything to me if i have to drive my child somewhere in an emergency. with that being said i also read reports od peoples cars turning off while driving. this needs to be looked into. i typed 2002 grand am gt wont start into yahoo and got 4,740,000 results. i understand its the internet but that's a big problem. so far i have only been a little late for things that can wait, but i do not want to have to wait for 10 minutes when i have to take my wife to the hospital for her to have our baby. thank you. *tr

This is a second vehicle with very limited mileage, which is driven by my wife. the car was purchased new from a pontiac dealer so i can verify mileage and that it was maintained. the first indication of a problem was while i was driving on the expressway the temperature gauge shot into the red zone. fortunately, i was near an exit and able to pull off the road before car stalled out. since i had already started to slow down i was able to control car and to get it stopped safely without having power steering and power brakes. car was towed to a local mechanic who pressure test cooling system and informed me of the problem and told me that gm was aware of problem and that they might help with repair cost. gm insisted that vehicle be checked by one of their dealers before anything could be done. the gm dealer did verify the fact the intake manifold gasket cracked causing car to overheat, and stall out. this problem is a result of the anti-freeze gm uses, dex cool, which reacts with intake manifold gasket causing the gasket to break down. gm has issued a service bulletin #03-06-01-010, back in 2003 to its dealer, but did not notify vehicle owners. it seems when the manufacturer installs bad parts or incompatible parts/fluids like this, that they should offer a solution that is reasonable and except the responsibility at the very least. *tr

About a year ago car wouldn't start. had it towed and the service garage replaced the ignition assembly and did a security update. about 2 weeks ago car wouldn't start tried jumping, nothing. security light on dash was blinking. researched on computer and found out if you turn key on for fifteen minutes then try to start the car it will start. well i tried this and it worked. leaving the key on for fifteen minutes resets the security system on the car. my car has started for the last 2 weeks. i called the dealer and they said they can't disarm the security system and there were no recalls for my car. maybe this is what the garage did a year ago and charged for a new assembly because i still use the original key. please help because i am not alone and this problem really confuses the repairman according to the web site i found this easy fix on. *tr

On february 23, 2009, i purchased a black 2002 pontiac grand am gt sedan, from log cabin auto located in murphy north carolina (cherokee county). i paid in full exactly 4,011 dollars to the car sales men, mark kissel. the second day i had the car i had to change a 0 2 censor. one week after i had made the purchase, the left and right blinker signals failed to operate. when the first initial incident occurred, i returned back to the dealer. when i got there the signals had resumed their proper function. i often have to turn my emergency blinkers on to get my signals to operate. until this day they do not always work. the following week, i am driving in the pouring rain with my infant child in the back seat, when my wind shield wipers failed to work. week after week something defaults on this vehicle. by this point i'm getting suspicious about the validity of the vehicle. so i return to the car lot and ask for all my paperwork, and a car fax report. at the time, he could not furnish any paper work. so i go to a certified gm motor dealership, also located here in murphy north carolina, and have them to provide me with a car fax report. this is when i found out the vehicle had been wrecked; also it had failed an emissions safety inspection and has fraudulent mileage. on 05/10/2002 the mileage registered as having 17 miles, 06/11/2002 it had 1,016, 05/22/2003 it had 108,190, 10/22/2008 it had 85,000, when i paid for the car, i signed a legal document stating that i agreed to purchase the vehicle with the knowledge that it had 84,156 miles on it. finally, after a week of waiting he furnishes me with all the copies. my brakes have completely gone out, my catalytic convertors and exhaust system needs to be replaced. tonight on 04/28/2009, my rear lights completely burnt out and my sunroof flew off the car and shattered onto the highway. i'm a struggling college student, was an orphan of the state (north carolina, until i aged out of foster care) and i am single mother. *tr

My 2002 grand am has a clicking sound coming from the dashboard. i took it to greenfield pontiac after hearing about a service bulletin. they told me the bulletin did not cover the problem i had and that since it did not create a safety hazard, it was not covered. the cost to me would be about $300 for a new 'multifunction switch' which is the blinker/directional arm. my turn signals do function properly when i need to use them, and as far as i know the lights are not actually flashing. the clicking is not constant, or everyday, but when it gets going, sometimes it does not stop for 10 to 20 minutes. i think i'm going deaf from turning the radio up so i don't have to hear the clicking. i've had several other bad experiences with this vehicle that were not covered (i.e. timing went at 40,000 mi--big bill!). i will never buy another gm product--they do not stand behind their vehicles! *tr

Leaving work on december 19, 2007 i applied brakes for approaching traffic signal. brakes seemed to lock without slowing down or stopping my vehicle. i tried three times applying increasing pressure and the car would not stop. finally, after 4th attempt, brake seemed to give and slow/stop my vehicle. i was within inches of rear-ending vehicle in front of me at the traffic light. i took my vehicle to a mechanic and was told that they could not locate anything wrong. brakes continue to malfunction particularly if my car is cold or not used for a period of hours. now i have resorted to testing the brakes prior to driving. i am concerned for my safety and my 16 year old daughter who has recently started driving the car. my 2002 pontiac grand am was purchased new in april 2002 and only has approximately 45,000 miles. brake pads have already been replaced one and mechanic tell me that they are only slightly worn so do not need replacement currently. *tr

I bought my 2002 grandam when it was a year old with 22,000 miles on it, i'm the second owner. i had problems within a few months. smoke came from the steering column and there was a clicking noise in the dash. then the blinkers didn't work right...would only work randomly...took it to the place where i bought it and they replaced the turn signal arm...still having trouble to this day with the blinkers. a few months ago the car wouldn't start...it was turning over but it wouldn't actually start. repair shop replaced fuel pump, didn't solve the problem but the car ran for a few weeks and then it wouldn't start again. repair shop said the passcode security/ignition sensor had to be replaced. they did it, and it worked for about 3 months and the other day the car wouldn't start, same thing as the first time. i called the local pontiac dealership and all i said when the mechanic answered was "i have a 2002 grandam and it won't start" without hesitation or any other information he asked me "was the security light on?" i said "yes! how did you know that?" he said it's a very common problem w/ these cars and the only thing to do is have the passcode sensor replaced but there's no guarantee that it won't happen again because they have no way of bypassing the security/passcode system. well, i told him i already did that a few months ago, so he said a temporary fix for right now is to put the key in the ignition and turn it to acc, wait 10-15 minutes and it should start, but this is temporary. well, it did work and has for the last few days but i know it will happen again and i'm worried that i'll get stranded or left helpless someday. it's ridiculous to have to deal with this problem and keep putting money into a problem that there's no solution to. i loved this car when i first got it and now i hate it and will never buy another pontiac again. i'm so disappointed. *tr

Passlock problem. car will often fail to start. so far turning the ignition to the on position for ten or fifteen minutes does temporarily solve the problem. gm/pontiac states that they can replace the passlock for about $600. *tr

2002 grand am se bought used 11/2006, july 2007 car starts intermittently, told nothing can be done, but its a common problem this happened about 5 times, august 2007 car would stall while driving no warning lights, would start immediately, took into dealer replaced a washer as per a service bulletin, was told could fix, may not that it could be passlock security system was told this is a very common problem on these cars as the part and the replacement parts are all faulty, car ran fine for 2 months, now wont start in the morning, fuel pump is turning, alternator and starter are fine, dealer says no problem found, have to crank 3-5 times to get it too start, then its fine all day, and the next morning wont start, then becomes intermittent. the parts to replace faulty passlock bring the repair job to over $500, and they cant guarantee and said that it will happen again, i have read about this on numerous websites and cant understand why pontiac wont fix the problem. i bought a newer car to elevate repair costs and now have to deal with a car payment and an unreliable vehicle. i will not buy a gm car again, due to their poor customer service and refusal to admit they have a problem when sooo many people are complaining about it. *tr

I own a 2002 pontiac grand am. ever since i purchased the vehicle, the security light will come on for a few days and then go off again. it would never blink, just stay on constantly for 3 to 4 days. this occurs approximately ever 3 months or so. beginning on 10/16/07, the car would start and then shut off again. that day i was able to restart the car immediately and have no other problems with it. however, on 10/24/07 when i went to leave for work the car would not start. there was no power whatsoever to the vehicle. at noon that day when my boyfriend tried to start it, it started just fine. i let it just sit for two days while i drove another vehicle to work. i began driving the vehicle again on 10/27. it ran fine until 1:30 pm on the 28th when i stopped to put gas in the car. after filling up with gas, the vehicle would not start again. i had done some prior research on the internet to see if anyone else had had this problem as well. hundreds of others with 2002 pontiac grand ams are having the same problem. i was told to turn the key to on and wait 10 minutes. the power did come back after 15 minutes, however, each time i attempted to restart the vehicle, it would shut down again. after sitting at the gas pump for over an hour trying to reset the system, my boyfriend arrived and pushed me to a parking spot where he disconnected the power to the battery, waited a few minutes, and then reconnected the power. the car did start after that. i have not however driven the car since as i am scared of where it will strand me next time. i am looking into getting it fixed. they are telling me that it's a daily occurrence to get calls about this problem at the dealerships i have contacted for quotes. it is going to cost $400 to get the ignition switch and halls sensor replaced. pontiac needs to realize that this is a serious safety issue. however, i'm afraid someone will have to end up dying from it before they do. *tr

2002 pontiac grand am shut off without any warning on 3 separate occasions while driving down the highway at 55 mph. it happened on january 15th and 17th and 27th. the problem was diagnosed as being the ignition switch and was informed this is a very common problem with this vehicle. i was also told pontiac refuses to recall because they do not feel it is a safety issue. how can driving in traffic and having your car shut off in the middle of the interstate/hwy not be a safety issue? a death from this problem is imminent. *tr

There issue was intermittent so there are no defining moments that lead to the start of the issue. the vehicle would idle at 2000 to 3000 rpm while in park and at time redlining itself. if the problem occurred while driving the car would begin to accelerate and would be hard to brake. at stops the car would lurch forward. during these events the vehicle check engine light would not display and not code was recorded by the computer. after four trips to the dealership the power train control module (pcm) was found to be faulty and was replaced. *jb

Security light keeps coming on, then car will not start. has left me stranded alone at night on several occasions. i took it to get it looked at and the computer that they hooked it up to said there was no problem, yet car will not start. this is the 5th time this has happened and i am told it is the passlock system. it took 3 days for the mechanics to go through the process of elimination to figure this out. i have talked to numerous people who have had the exact same problem and the only thing gm offers is a 600.00 bill for a problem that they are well aware exists. *jb

I got the car with 103,000 on it. ran great. on my way to work i stopped at a gas station to get gas. i pumped the fuel and got into the vehicle. i tried to start it but it wouldn't fire. it just kept turning over until the battery died. i had it towed where i work, and they said they fixed it. the security light came on for 2 to 3 weeks. on 7-17-07 it died again at the same place. i was in a parking spot this time so i wasn't worried but i had to wait 15+ minutes to get it to start. it was the pass lock. i talked to a gm dealer, and they told me that it was the ignition cylinder. i was told that it would be about $500.00 to $600.00 to get the item and have it installed. i have been reading on the internet that lots of people had the same problem. i felt that this could cause a very big problem in the case of an emergency. if someone needed to get to the hospital or needed to pick their child up because the babysitter couldn't make it. the item should be recalled , and the dealer should pay for all necessary costs in fixing the problem. *ak

The pontiac was brought in o the dealer i bought it from because the driver side window fell into the door and would no longer work, the (regulator clip, the piece on the bottom of the window on the right side snapped and caused the window to crack in that corner as well,. as a result, the window was replaced which was not covered under warranty due to this plastic piece that was not suitable or strong enough to hold up the window. also, the dealer informed me that this was most likely going to happen again. they had seenthe same defect in other grand ams as well.i would consider this a defect that could cause an accident, luckly, the window didnt fall when driving.the exact date was unsure. *ak

Hazard flasher switch was replaced on 3/9/07 because of a constant clicking like the turn signal being on. this did not stop the clicking but slowed it down. the clicking was still there , and traced to the steering column-turn signal switch. some days this was constant, others it was slow but very annoying. *ak

2002 grand am gt had rack and pinion steering column replaced may 9, 2007. nine days later, part failed. general motors said it was a manufacturer's defect in the parts. rack and pinion system was replaced again on 5-24-07. problem remains and have to take to another dealership for diagnosis. other dealership preliminary diagnosis is same problem. safety concern!!!. steering becomes difficult. i have a 6-year old and drive on the highway often with her. this needs to be investigated for safety concerns.

I am the original owner of a 2002 pontiac grand am - four door vehicle. it currently has approximately 40,000 miles. all four tires leaked air and i needed to constantly to check and fill all four tires. they seemed to leak a random paces losing air at different rates. i have had multiple problems with this vehicle, including noise from the tires shortly after purchase. the dealership agreed to replace two of the tires per some service bulletin but once they were rotated, the noise started up again. also, had problems with my windshield wipers remaining on when utilizing mist for up to 25 swipes. the wipers also stop in the middle of the windshield when using mist or the intermittent option. the electric door locks and window buttons only worked on occasion other than those on the drivers side. at approximately 33,000 miles while having a routine oil change, a valve had to be replaced due to antifreeze/oil leaking with the potential of burning out the engine. clearly this has been just one problem after another. am completely disappointed in pontiac. this was my first (and last) pontiac purchase due to the number of issues with the car. the intent at purchase was that this vehicle could then be passed to my teenage daughter who will begin driving this year, knowing that i have maintained the car and it has low mileage. at his point, i am concerned for her safety. *ak

4 times now my 2002 pontiac grand am 2.2ltr, 4dr car has not started. i will have it towed and once it gets to the dealership, it starts. this has left me stranded 4 times now, and having to pay for towing and diagnostics tests run. this last time, i almost paid for a new fuel pump, then it started working. i recently found out that this is happening to a lot of this model of cars, and that is has to do with the passlock anti theft system. *jb

My daughter attempted to start the 2002 grand am on this date and the vehicle turned over but did not start , second instance. the indicator light for the security system was on. i checked the vehicle for several things, including recharging the battery there was enough power to the starter. nothing worked. i then checked several internet sites and learned that several other grand am owners were having the same problem. learned of a proceedure to reset the security passl ock by turning the key to on"for 10+ minutes, turning it to off, and then starting. please note that this vehicle was purchased used in november of 2006 from a dealer, and no issues were found with the vehicle at that time. we also only received one key for the vehicle, and it wasan uncoded factory key that so often is issued with the vehicles from the factory. also, our vehicle does not have remote entry installed as is usually the case with this issue. for now, the vehicle is running, but i am concerned that my 17-yr old daughter will be driving down the road, and the vehicle will quit running and she will be unable to control the car, (power steering/brakes/etc, and her safety will be jeopardized. gm needs to correct this problem before someone is seriouly injured or killed, since they engineered this rediculous fucntion on thiese vehicles. *ak

Rims on 2002 pontiac grand am have the chrome peeling causing a poor seal and air to leak from tires. tire service center had stacks of these rims in the back from people who have had to replace all 4 rims. *tr

For several months the vehicle has emitted a clicking noise from the central dash area that has become more frequent. it is usually triggered by using the turn signal - once the turn signal stops, the clicking noise continues for varying amounts of time. the dealer said it is not related to the service advisory on the hazard flasher, but that it is the wiring to multi-function switch in the steering column shorting out. from internet searches this sounds like a fairly common problem and a short sounds like a potential fire hazard. should there be a recall or at least a warranty extension on this failure mode? the repair cost will be about $350 at the dealer. *jb

I have a 2002 pontiac grand am. i bought the car one year ago. the car now has 38,000 miles on it. a few months back, the car started doing this thing where sometimes it would start, other times it would not. i was left stranded with my son in the car numerous times. but, when i would get the car towed to get fixed somewhere, the car would start right up. finally after weeks of frustration, the locale pontiac dealership replaced my passlock module. the car has been starting since. but now there is another problem. the car is overheating. i have had it in and out of the shop three times now, getting different things done, and it is still overheating. this car is just one problem after another. i have spent a total of 2000 on repairs, tows, and car rentals. the extended warranty hasn't paid a penny,(and it's supposed to be the best you can get), and i am now out of money, can't drive my car, and still have 3 years of 325.00 a month car payments. i am very disappointed with pontiac. i will never buy another pontiac product. they are extremely unreliable. i am not the only one having these problems either. there is a website, (edmunds.com,) where you can read about all the other people with grand am's, having the same problems. *jb

Pontiac grand am was purchased in may 2006, second owner, from a dealership in edmonton, alberta. was not informed of any problems with the car. one day after we put gas in the car, once we returned to the car , the security light was flashing and the car would not start. we read the manual, did what it suggested with the gas cap and so forth. still would not start. we pushed it to a secure place, called a tow truck company, and had it delivered right to the dealership. now keep in mind, this was only about 3 months from purchase. the mechanic stated that the computer needed to be replaced, that was done at no charge to us. it started to do the same thing in the car dealerships parking lot, the security light started flashing and would not start. we were told to do the 10 minute procedure, and then it did start. you could tell they had no idea what the problem was. we were told that if the problem happened again to call. but this time out of our pockets, which we could not afford. the security light now stayed on all the time. we had it hooked up to the computer to analyze the problem, no codes came up, basically no problem. i really think that gm should do something about this problem because as we speak to others they had the same problems. it makes me wonder why i love gm vehicles at this point. there are lots to choice from dealerships, so i would suggest that they do something before they ruin the trust of their customers.*ak

My wife and children were driving on the autobahn and the engine died. she was able to pull over to the side of the road. the engine would not start and she had it towed to an authorized service center. the timing chain had broke and damaged the entire engine. i was told i would have to get a new engine shipped to germany at a cost of $9000. the car had 52000 miles on it and had been recently serviced. the warranty had just expired at 50000 miles and gm said the engine was not their problem anymore. *jb

Our 2002 pontiac grand am also developed the annoying "clicking" noise that sounded as if the blinkers were on when they were not. this is a known issue with the multi-function turn signal switch supplied to gm by trw. how do i know this? a good friend of mine is employed with trw as the quality engineer on the p90 line and informed me of a design change to the switch during the 2002 model year. he supplied me with a replacement switch that corrected the issue. when will/is gm going to step up to the plate and acknowledge this issue and recall all affected vehicles? *jb

Everything electrical would turn on in the car except the engine. the engine will not turn over at all. the battery is fully charged and all diagnostic tests came back ok. i don't want to see anyone stranded in this vehicle because of something that is obviously warped. *jb

I was going down the road and the light on my dash that shows my speed went out, it was dark and i had no idea how fast i was going. the turn signal lit up and after that i tried to turn my turn signal on to turn and it would not work. *nm

I purchased my 2002 grand am used in july 2005 with 25,000 miles on it. have since replaced the timing and everything that goes along with that ($2000+) and we are trying to get some of that money back from gm as we are aware there was a service bulletin that had something to do with what happened. now... i had received a "recall" regarding the blinkers about an issue where they stop working. the issue i'm having, of course, is not covered by the recall. in december, i began hearing a clicking sound coming from the dash which sounded like the blinker was flashing. the blinkers are not flashing but it sounds like they are. they do seem to be working fine when i am actually trying to use them. doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes it clicks just a few times and stops, sometimes it clicks alot to the point where i just turn the radio up so i can't hear the clicking. the dealer told me this would cost $300 to replace the whole arm--which apparently involves removing the steering column. luckily, i know a mechanic who will do this repair for the cost of the arm. what is the problem with gm and these grand ams? they sure don't stand behind their product! i love my car, but this is getting ridiculous...to the point that i'm tempted to buy a foreign car next time! *nm

While driving at 45 mph on a back road my car shut off and at that point i also lost power steering so i had to get out and push the car off the road by myself. had it towed; first mechanic said it was the security system and a dealer would have to look at it. so i had it towed 42 miles to a dealership and they told me the fuel pump had burned up, but this is clearly a safety hazard as the car just shut off in the middle of the road, not to mention on an extremely bad corner that i could hardly maneuver due to the lack of power steering. car also has problems with brakes...had brakes & rotors replaced twice now (once in august 2005 and most recently on december 28, 2006) and now there's already a problem as the brakes failed when i had to stop short, luckily an accident was avoided. *nm

I have a 2002 grand am manual transmission. the recall for the transmission going into reverse was on 2000-2001 grand am's but not on the 2002. the transmission was made by powertrain, mine was also. *nm

I have a common issue with my 2002 pontiac grand am as well. there have been several times i have gotten into my car to leave for work and have had to wait 10, 20 or even 25 minutes until the security light on the dash cuts off before i can start my car. initially, i thought it was the battery or the starter; that is not the case. when i called my local pontiac service department, i was told the same as others that have this same issue: it will continue to get worse until finally the car will not start no matter how long you wait. it is a costly issue to fix. gm has not issued a recall on this problem, even though i personally know someone else that has this issue; the gm service department clerk that i talked to told me he gets at least one call a day regarding this problem. *nm

I drove to the mall, my car ran fine. after i was done shopping (about 2 hours later) i went to leave, and my car would not start. it left me with my 2 children stranded and a tow bill. after i had the car towed home, it started right up! i am afraid to go anywhere now in fear that my children and i will be stranded again, and i will have a large tow bill. my cruise control has quit working too. *jb

Electrical - since i bought 2002 pontiac grand am gt for my college bound daughter in 2002 more than 10-12 times she complained her car doesn't start and i had to go to give her jump. on one occasion she took to the dealer. several mechanics even told me that there are lots of owner of this model complained about the electrical problem. i even change the battery in first 2 years. now again i am having problem car doesn't start without jump (1/23/2007) . *nm

Mulitifunction switch failure in our 2002 grand am auto. i have read numerous complaints from other grand am owners having this same problem and gm/pontiac refuses to issue the recall for vehicles from 2002 forward. yet they have a recall for this exact switch for 1999 - 2001 vehicles. we are trying to get this switch repaired at this time but the cost is very very high.

Gm 3.4 liter engine intake gasket failure. this is my second vehicle with this motor that has had the intake gasket fail. *jb

My wife has a 2002 pontiac grand am gt. about a month ago 10/2006, for the first time, her car would not start. it had full battery, all the accessories started up with the key being fitted into the ignition and turned to the on position. upon having it towed to the dealership and getting a song and dance about the body control unit ""possibly"" being damp ""could"" of caused the malfunction, they replaced it for about 300.00 dollars. this morning (11/14/2006), my wife went out to her car and the same thing happened. it would not start. i now started researching this problem on the internet to see if i could find a solution to this myself. i found a plethora of individuals, all with 2002 grand ams, all having this same issue. it seems that in 2002 grand ams a problem with the security system prevents you from starting your car. the only work around is to sit in your car for between 10 to 15 minutes with the key in the ignition and turned on. after said amount of time the security light should stop blinking, and you can then ""possibly"" start your car. i do understand that nhtsa is only concerned about vehicle defects that pose a threat while operating your vehicle. being a police officer, i see the potential of a threat by having a vehicle not start. i do not want my wife sitting in a dark parking lot for 10-15 minutes while the security system has her vehicle disabled. what if she sought refuge in her car to try to escape someone who was chasing her? what about all these other grand am owners? you can do a google or yahoo search for "2002 grand am will not start". you will then see that this is a very common issue and might want to take these incidents into consideration for a possible recall. *nm

My 2002 pontiac grand am has an oil leak in intake manifold and front crank seal. the car is less than 4 years with 66000 miles. i have had alot of problems with this car since i bought it new. i understand this is a constant problem with this car 3.4 engine. why isn't anything being done about this? i had a 1997 gran am and put 140000 miles on it with no problem. the tech's say they used cheap gaskets on this car. i don't think thjis car will make 140000 miles without a major failure.and gm wonders why they are losing sales to japanese car makers. my next car will not be gm and this is after owning nothing but gm cars for 40 years!!!!!

I have a 2002 pontiac grand am gt and the turn signal indicators work at random, they work for awhile and then just stop working for awhile. no turn signal lights outside the car and no indicator arrows inside the car. then, they begin to work again but only for a awhile. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while the vehicle was in reverse at low speed, there was a loss of all steering. the contact immediately placed the vehicle in park. after initial inspection by the contact, it was determined the steering rack and pinion fractured. the dealer was alerted.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the vehicle's right front wheel made a rubbing noise. updated 10/4/2006 - the dealer has rotated, balanced and mounted new tires on the vehicle but the noise continued. the calipers had to be resurfaced and lubed. goodyear eagle r4a. *nm

2002 pontiac grand am se security system locks out ignition causing the system to be reset which takes up to 10 minutes with the key in the ignition in the on position. this has happened approximately 4 times in the last 12-16 months. everything i see on the internet about this is called a pass lock system that needs to be replaced. so far this has only caused the vehicle from being started, but is there a possibility that the system could fail during driving conditions causing the loss of brakes and steering? i would have it replaced but the cost $350-$400 is just outrageous this is based on the cost my dad had to pay to get his 2001 pontiac bonneville fixed that did the same thing. *jb

I have a 2002 pontiac grand am. i am having problems with the turn signal switch. the blinker switch keeps clicking after i turn. it is aggravating to me and i have read of a lot of 2002 grand am owners having the same problem. i took it into the shop to see about getting fixed but it will cost me over $400. this is ridiculous and something should be done about this. also, i have had to have the catalytic converter replaced. i wish i would have never bought this vehicle. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle would not start and the security light came on. the vehicle was taken to the service dealer who determined that the vcm was burned out. the module vcm part was replaced, and within 4 months the same problem occurred. the vehicle was returned to the service dealer and the vcm was replaced a second time. within the span of 5 years, the security module burned out 5 separate times, and was replaced by the same dealer each time.

While driving my security light came on. i read the owners book and did what it told me to do. the next day the car would not start. i did everything the book said to do. so i had it towed to a dealer and was told the ignition switch would need to be replaced. *jb

Since we purchased our pontiac grand am in april 2002 we have had several items fail that i feel should not have. the fuel pump and fuel relay? failed at 6,000 miles, the window sash channels and relays have failed 3 times. twice on the driver side and 1 time on the passenger side. the dash is peeling up at the base of the windshield close to the vin# plate. the dome light bracket failed and the light no longer is on the interior roof. cheap plastic bracket that will cost several hundred dollars to fix. the driver power seat has failed leaving the seat in the up position. the worst thing about all of this is that it has cost me several thousand dollars to have these items fixed and the car only has 41,000 miles on it. *nm

I went to have my oil changed and car maintenance and the tech said that i have oil in my radiator. i was extremely shocked by this and he said that it could be a leaking gasket or worse that i should take it to a dealership right away. i took it to a local gm dealership and they took it in and the gaskets were leaking on my 2002 pontiac grand am gt with only 56000 miles at the time. i had never heard of such a thing on such a low mileage car and well maintained. i knew i had to get it fixed so they fixed it gm said that they would pay 50% of the repair costs. i have further researched my car and the orange antifreeze and issues many others have had with this anti-freeze and how it eats gaskets and causes many other problems. gm does not want to admit to this and they are continuing to use this product even after all the findings. my brother has endure this same issue in his truck he has since replaced his gaskets and now is using only green anti freeze. i now have since found out that i have a wheel bearing going in my car. what is going on with these cheap parts. this could be a hazard. i am waiting for my refund from the repairs of the gaskets so i can turn around and repair the wheel bearings all the while i am still making car payments. *jb

At times, vehicle rpm's will jump about 300 higher than normal. it can do it on up hills, on flat and on down hills. it is more prevalent when cresting a hill. the rpm's will not move all the way up the hill but when the car crests, it will sometimes do it. i've had it to the dealer three times but they haven't been able to duplicate it but they also only take it out for five or ten minutes for a test drive. i notice it more when i do a trip of some kind on the highway. i don't notice it very much in my everyday driving but i don't usually drive very far weekdays. it has been doing it for over six months. it doesn't seem to be getting any worse but it also isn't getting any better. it can happen 15 - 20 times on a two hour trip. *jb

Your recall of 2000-2001 pontiac grandams (03v327000) states that if the turn signals/hazard flashers become inoperative it could result in a crash. now pontiac sends me a letter letting me know that my 2002 grandam could have a problem with the turn signals/hazard flashers that could allow them to fail. with a little logic - if it is dangerous for a 2000-2001 then it also dangerous for a 2002 and there should be a recall! *jb

First, the car began with overheating. i had to continually replace the coolant to keep the car from overheating. it would not leak out of the car. upon visual inspection the leak from the coolant did not leak out of the vehicle. the vehicle finally failed after driving. the temperature gauge reached a high level and the vehicle shut off. the vehicle was clearly overheated with again the coolant levels low. was repair began, it was found that the all the gaskets within the engine had blown. this caused water and coolant to leak into the engine. causing the engine to work more due to the build up and causing overheating. this also caused the water to leak out of the intake manifold. finally a build needed to be flushed out of all the hoses and engine itself. a build up mixture of water and oil. *jb

After using the turn signal, i noticed there was a clicking noise still coming from under the dash for a few minutes after the signal was turned off. this happens every time i use the turn signal and the latest incident resulted in smoke in the cabin but no fire. after doing much research, i see this is an ongoing issue with this vehicle, as with previous years. why is there no recall or tsb issued for this item, seeing as though this results in turn signal failure, and can even cause a fire. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 75mph on the interstate, the vehicle lost all power without warning. the contact managed to pull over without incident, but the engine would not restart. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer for inspection. the mechanic determined the timing chain fractured which caused damage to the engine. the dealer suggested replacing the engine.

On my way to an event, i heard a pop and the steering wheel became stiff; then stalled. i had it towed to a mechanic, who declared the timing belt broke and repairs are going to be costly. i have low mileage on the car, and believe some remedy should be sought. *jb

Complained 2 years ago about turn signal clicking noise in dash when not engaged. received letter from pontiac april 2006 to have signal/hazard warning flashers replaced. took to jack wolf pontiac and was told by craig wegner, service manager it was also the hazard switch and the multi-function switch causing problem. these are not covered and would cost me $474.00 to replace. cannot stand constant clicking noise any longer. please look into this matter. *jb

The multi-function switch on my 2002 pontiac grand am failed in november 2005. the turn signals would not always work, the indicator for the hazard lights would come on in the car and there was a constant clicking noise. i had the switch replaced at a cost of $323 because the dealer told me that eventually both the turn signals and hazard switch would become inoperable. i received a service notice in april, 2006 (#04098) which indicated that the repair would be covered. however, only the hazard switch replacement is covered, not the replacement of the multi function switch. so, even though the failure of the multi function switch caused the same dangerous situation of turn signal/hazard light failure, gm is opting not to cover the cost. does this make sense to you? *nm

In high humidity (raining) or high temps and high humidity, the turn signals stop working. in cold temps, the directional 'click' occurs sporadically when the directional are not turned on. this problem has been occurring over the last 2 years, but isn't consistent enough to bring into the shop for repair. Car not starting due to faulty pass lock system. malfunctioning component is the ignition cylinder. gm has discontinued the stock replacement item and according to my mechanic, has issued a new replacement number but is not available. i have successfully started the call by turning the ignition to the on position for 10 minutes, switch to off position then back to the on position for another 10 minutes. repeat 1 more time for a total of 3 sets. it forces a reprogram on the ignition computer. i would like a replacement part as a recall. it seems this was a faulty part to begin with. *jb

Bought the car in 03 had 30000 miles on it. ran great, loved the power... then about 6 months later(36,000) it started.. first was the brake pads, replaced those, found out that the pads had been installed incorrectly, thus wore the rotors. replaced the rotors. heard the clicking sound from under the dash, took car to electrician, replaced the relay.... 1 year later, heard grinding from front wheels, again.... found out the calipers were stuck at full brake, so the pads, rotors and calipers needed to be replaced. had the car stall as if it were out of gas.... could not restart, had to leave until morning(it was 3:00 am at the time), car restarted just fine in morning, still don't know what that was all about. now radio antenna went out, cd player skips like i am running over speed bumps all the time. also back speakers went out.. investigated and found that the metal on the speakers was installed touching the frame in the back window, causing them to short out... now car is surging at normal speeds, suspect bad fuel pump.. and once again the licking is back again. gm has paid $0 for repairs. they say it is not their fault... funny, i did not install these things and they are apparently problems that gm has been having. i love(rather loved) gm. i have always known them to be reliable and sturdy. this car has taught me otherwise. i can now see the direction that gm is going and i will never buy a gm vehicle again. if anyone has any other problems with their cars they can not figure out, let me know. i have been through this car about a 100 times and know what i am looking for. hoping gm wakes up and makes quality cars again. *jb

The ignition system has a device called passlock, which is supposed to disable the fuel pump in the event that someone is trying to steal your car. however, the '02 grand am is not always given encoded keys, but the system is still active. the car can be disabled for 10 minutes, awaiting the system to reset itself. *nm

We purchase a 2002 pontiac grand am se in july of 2005 from champion chevrolet in brighton michigan, we had it in to dealer within the first few weeks of owning it, which they didn't repair that day because what needed to be done would take to long so it was taken in the following sat. had the abs,trac control and the service engine soon sensor was replaced and there was a noise under the front drivers side which was fixed but came back a week later they told us that the noise was normal, i don't believe this as none of our other cars make this noise not even our chevy pickup truck. we also had it back in again for the sensors for the abs, trac control and the service engine light that keeps coming on. we cont'd to have this problem and still don't have it fixed. when the lights come on i don't have my abs brakes anymore and no trac control. my blinkers also have been giving me a problem as sometimes they work and other times they don't. most of the time i can get them to work if i put my hazard lights on for a few mins. but i should not have to. i have been a gm person all my life as my dad has worked for gm for 35 something yrs. but they need to fixs these problems as it is unsafe for me, my children, my husband or whoever else maybe in the car and the other drivers on the road especially here in michigan with snowy and icy roads. i also have read some of the other complaints here and it seems that there are a lot of other people having the same problems. i was also told today while getting my oil change done that there is a problem with the dexcool in this car too. i did look around on the net and notice that there seems to be a lot of people having this problem. i have not had this problem yet as i only have 50,000 miles on my car but some of the signs that people are talking about i have notice so it will go into a dealer to have it checked and i will be keeping my invoices as i hope gm does the right thing and takes care of this problem to. *nm

Car was at gas station and wouldn't start. had it towed to shop and they said the passlock code failed. they stated the ignition switch and the ignition lock cylinder needs replaced. well i replaced the switch and nothing. so i called a dealer and they stated that the sensor in the lock cylinder has went out and needed replaced. so i have ordered the lock cylinder it was 160.11,the switch was 60.00 dollars. the shop wanted 900.00 dollars to repair,ill do it myself. *nm

Turn signals and flashers do not work intermittently. they don't work more often then they do. the dealership could not duplicate (don't think they really tried) i am concerned that when i really need the hazard flashers they wont work, it is dangerous to not use blinkers and hand signals are harder to see. *jb

Dt: consumers daughter went to start the vehicle and it would not start. the vehicle turned over but did not start. the indicator light for the theft system was on. she had the vehicle towed home. had to turn the vehicle off, put it in the on position for ten minutes, then shut it off, then attempted to restart the vehicle. in the owner's manual this was what it recommended to do in order to bypass the theft system. the dealer has not checked this vehicle. *ak updated 12/07/05. *jb

I have a 2002 pontiac grand am coupe, and have had problems with the turn signals not working.sometimes they work, but here lately they do not most of the time.

As i was driving my pontiac grand am (2002) the engine out of the blue started on fire as i was driving. it was the first time in the day using my car and i drove about three miles at 30 mph to a shopping plaza. as i was looking for a parking place at 5-10 mph a man ran up to my car and told me to get out of the car because it was on fire. the fire appeared to start in the back of the engine. i parked the car and it was on fire about 15 min until fire trucks came. the car was very well maintained and in very good condition. there was a defect in the car to make it start on fire out of the blue. gm will not take responsiblity for this and i am out of 14,000. this incident put me and my 14 month old sons life in danger. please look into this issue.

The car was bought used in july of 2003, it had 36k. in febuary 2005 the car had 53k, and needed the fromt brake pads changed. the pads were changed, and it's now may 2005, and the pads are almost gone. i've some research on the internety and found that several others have had this same problem with there car..please help...

I purchased a 2002 pontiac grand am se brand new. i began having trouble with it starting at 36,400 miles, the security light would come on, and car would not start. i called the dealership and because it was off warranty, they were not willing to help (although they had been very helpful during the sale). i took it to a small repair shop, and they thought that the problem was caused by a remote start system that i had installed at a dealership. removed the remote start, but continued to have problems with it starting, and the security light coming on (if i kept the ignition on for 10 minutes it would reset). at 44,000 miles, while sitting in my driveway warming up the engine died. i had it towed to a local dealership where they found that the timing chain had broken and completely destroyed the engine. i called the dealership that i had purchased the vehicle from, and they refused to do anything about it. after much effort, they finally said that they might consider a "goodwill" warranty if i could provide receipts for all of my oil changes. since these were done at home, i did not have receipts. i am still making payments on this car and feel that because it was a catastrophic incident that the dealership should have been willing to help me replace the engine in the car. the vehicle only had 44,000 miles on it, and it is sitting in my driveway dead. anybody that looks at the car will know that i loved my grand am. because i did not have the money to replace the engine (they wanted $3000) i ended up buying a 1995 jeep cherokee with 225,000 miles on it, this vehicle starts and runs everyday!!! it is very sad that general motors cannot take a few lessons from jeep in how to build a reliable product. up until the day that i called the dealership with a car that would not start at 36,400 miles, i raved about what a terrific place they had been to deal with. 400 miles off warranty...they did not even know my name.*ak

The windows on my 2002 pontiac grand am se have numerous scratches on them from the windows going up and down. several of them were replaced once but the problem continues to recur and now the dealer will not do anything else about it. they claim it is coming from dirt collecting in the weatherstripping. i feel that this is a defect in the particular type of window moulding on this model car. it allows dirt to collect in a lip that is not flat against the window and this in turn scratches the windows when they are used. they said it was a design problem and they will not correct it because they cannot put another moulding on the car. i am very disappointed in the fact that my new car with less than 25,000 miles has this defect. *ak

Coolant leak - internally.... blew head gasket. car brand new!! service records indicating that car was 100% properly maintained by owner. service department at perruzzi pontiac in langhorne, pa. is keeping a tight blindfold on this known defect in this car and all other grand am gt 2002 models that have reported the same problems. *jb

(i worked for a local dealer for 10 years and now a local repair shop for 3 years)i have seen multiple hazard flasher failures in pontiac grand ams, chevy malibus, olds alero. also i know there is a recall on the 2001 malibu for this failure and it uses the same part #. why no recall?? for customers paying for this is a inconvenience. the part was cheap for me but a customer should not have to pay for this!. *jb

I purchased a 2002 pontiac grand am (with about 20,000 miles on it) from gandrud chevrolet in green bay, wi. when the car had 30,000 - 35,000 miles on it, the front bumper started peeling paint and the flashers started clicking occasionaly on their own. by the time the warranty was up (about 40,00 to 45,000 miles) the paint was really comming off and now the flashers/turn signals constantly click as if on. even though they constantly do this, they are not flashing. i took the car to the dealer about the paint and they said sorry the warrenty is up. is their any recourse i have to make them fix the tur signal/flasher problem?*ak

The window sash channels have broken on my 2002 pontiac grand am. this is the component that holds the window glass in place. the car barely has passed 50,000 miles and the windows will no longer stay up. the pontiac dealer will repair the piece for $150 each window. *ak

The blinker switch will keep ticking like the turn signals are on but there is no flashing just the sound while your driving.it eventually led to complete failure of of all dash controls and lights could not even start my car.sometimes it would even shut down while i was driving.i had the blinker switch replaced after being in the shop 4 times.the blinker switch comes with a 2000 mile warrenty.it has been about 3 or 4 thousand now and it is going out again.it is a $130 part.*ak

I replaced the lower intake manifold gasket in my pontiac grand-am (2002) at a cost of $700. the problem was well-known amongst the mechanics i saw and i was informed that this problem needs to be addressed. the mechanics could not believe that gm had not fixed this problem. i was told this was due to faulty gaskets and that the quality of gasket used was quite poor. i researched the problem on the internet and ran into numerous individuals with the same problem. the problem is common to the v-6 3.1l and 3.4l engines. it causes rapid oil loss and coolant leaks. this made the car undrivable and damaged the engine. my car is only two years old and this damage happened outside the warranty. i was treated rather rudely by pontiac and offered no help. this issue is ripe for a class-action or recall scenario. very dangerous to the driver and car. high cost of repairs for a twenty dollar gasket. no accident occurred, but was stranded. *jb

I have a 2-door model grand am and the window support clips on both side windows have broken within a month. the windows will not stay up as a result and the dealer has quoted $400 per window to correct the problem. the entire glass has to be replaced to fix the clip.*ak

While driving down the highway at 55 mph, the steering wheel suddenly snapped upward, as if hitting the tilt lever to get out of the car, almost causing an accident. now the tilt lever is not functioning at all and wheel is locked in the upward position.

Intermittently vehicle will not start. vehicle was taken to the dealer on numerous occasions, and no defects were found. manufacturer stated they will make contact with the dealer vehicle was serviced when the dealer found the same defect two years ago, and currently the problem recurred.*ak

While driving at 35 mph on a side street steering wheel became stiff followed by the vehicle stalling. the vehicle was towed to mechanic, who determined that the timing belt broke, which should not happen at this low mileage. *ak

While driving at low speed a noise was coming from the front tires. when moving at high speeds consumer could not hear it. tires continuously deflated. the inside of the wheel cracked, which punctured the tire. consumer had to replace the front rims. however, the noise did not start off loud, it got louder as driving. whenever it rained and the vehicle was wet consumer would not hear the noise. pontiac was aware of this problem. *ak

Had new front brake pads and rotors put on car with under 16,000 miles on it. sometimes brakes vibrate and make noise. called dealer and was told brakes were not covered under warranty because it's normal wear and tear unless there was a mechanical problem. *ak

I bought this car in november 2003, in april of 2004 i started to have problems with the brake making noises. the car went into the shop and they replaced the driver side caliper and replaced front brake pads. in june of 2004 the car went back in for the same brake noise the shop resurfaced my rotors and replaced a missing brake clip. in july the car went back into the shop for the same brake noise again, the shop replaces the brake pads again and resurfaced the rotors again. it is now october and the noise is still there! in july 2004 the car went back into the shop for a knocking noise coming from the front end. the strut mounts were replaced. again in july the car went back in for the same front end noise. the shop replaced the steering rack which did not fix the problem so they put the old one back in. they then replaced the right front strut and lower control arm. the noise was not fixed. in october they replaced the stabilizer shaft isolators and also replaced the two front tires due to a bulletin. also in october they lubed all front end parts. with all the problems i decided to call to call gm themselves, sadly not much has been done though! *nm

The jack collapsed while changing the front tire. this caused damage to the front end alignment. the jackwass available for analysis, and the dealer was contacted.*ak

Around 37,000 miles i noticed a little movement in the steering wheel. at 40,000 miles the steering rack was making a lot of noise when moved. i called my dealership and they could not get it in that week. when i did bring it in the power steering rack was gone. this is a 2002 car this should not happen. i also owned a pontiac grand am 1999 and the same thing happened to this car around the same mileage. there is definitely a problem!!!

While driving 55 mph and proceeding to operate the automatic window in the down position on the driver side, it stopped operating. two days later the same issue occurred on the passenger side window. the consumer obtained the replacement parts from the dealer and had her son make the repairs. please provide any further information. *jb

Consumer complained about multiple problems with this vehicle. while driving vehicle stalled on its own. consumer tried to restart vehicle, but was unable to do so. then, fifteen minutes later the vehicle started. driver's and passenger side electrical windows rolled up and down on their own. also, transmission failed while shifting. consumer contacted dealer for an appointment for these problems. *ak

Car has failed to start on 4 separate occasions. first three times quickly fix worked, turning key to on position for 15 minutes then restarting vehicle. called dealer and they told me there was nothing they could do. 4th time car wouldn't start after 2 tries with the "quick fix". nothing has been done by dealer or gm to resolve this issue. faith in pontiac products is rapidly declining. *ak

My daughter was driving on interstate 81 at 70 mph when the motor shut off. she was almost rear ended by tractor trailer while trying to get off of the road. she had no engine or power steering to assist her in getting off road. my daughter very distraught over the incident and could have been killed. wrecker took car to pontiac dealer who discovered that the fuel tank was dry while the gauge on the console showed over a quarter of tank. at time of arrival to the repair shop the dealer told me about that it possibly was a fuel sensor problem. pontiac service bulletin # 01-06-04-008d notes problem with fuel sensor. fuel pump also burned up on car at time of the bad reading on the gauge. fuel sensor was replaced by pontiac but i had to pay for the fuel pump at cost of $518.34. i should not have to pay for the fuel pump as their known problem with the fuel sensor caused the fuel pump to fail. more importantly in my opinion this bulletin on the fuel sensor should be a recall since the failure of the fuel sensor put my daughters life in jeopardy. this is a serious safety issue that pontiac is taking lightly. i called them to complain and they offered me a " complementary oil change" ???. i told them that i was not satisfied with that answer and they came back to me the 2nd time and said to hold my receipts in case of future recall and then i could get reimbursed. my question to them is how they can recall or reimburse me if my daughter had died in this incident. they came back to me a third time and offered me a $1500.00 loyal buyer coupon to be used on my next general motors purchase. i told them to keep it as there would not be any more gm purchases by my family. i will not support a company that knowingly puts my family in danger in order to save a dollar. this bulletin # 01-06-04-008d should be a recall as it has potential to create serious injury or death to the passengers in this type of vehicle--- 2002 pontiac grand am.*ak

Power windows keep braking. 8 times for drivers side, 1 time on passenger side. sash asm. that fastens to the window for motion keeps braking. a total of 9 repairs in 18 months. *la

Driver and passenger windows rubbing? (scratched) windows really scratched ever since i bought it and noticed alot of other cars like mine have the same scratches from opening and closing the automatic windows i spoke to a dealer rep before and they said it was the tinting they used that was too tight? but when my car was brand new and i started to roll up/down my windows it made the scratches, so i decided to hide the scratches by tinting my windows so you couldnt see it as much, but it really is visible. from me speaking with other grand am owners that i see that their windows look exactly like mine most of them don;t have tinting. and they look as bad as mine. *jb

I have had many problems with the brakes on my car. i have had almost everything from pumping, noise, grinding, fading, and one time they didn't catch for a long time and i almost hit someone. *ak

My wheel broke off while driving, had no steering and no brakes, not exactly sure what let go, was told covered under warranty and then after the car was fixed by the dealership the dealership said i had to pay, as this could not have happened. company sided with dealership and said would have someone from the company meet with me and look into the matter but has not. i've been waiting since nov02.

Vehicle shakes severely while driving.the shake is worse when the brake is depressed. dealership serviced the vehicle 6 times, in which they resurfaced the rotors, replaced the brake pad rotor twice, aligned the front end, and rotated and balanced the tires. the shaking this exist.*ak

Fuel gauge would read full, yet gas tank was half empty. dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak

I have a 2002 grand am gt, and the abs light started coming on, took to two diff repair shops (one was a midas) and both told me the right front bearings and abs sensor had to be replaced, and prob the left on in next cpl months. also took the car to a gm dealer, estimate of $475 for right bearing and sensor, and prob the left one in next few months. all 3 places told me that its a common problem in the grand am, aleros and some buicks (same front end i guess)....

While braking vehicle pulsated. dealership repaired all four of the brake rotors/brake lines/calipers. however, consumer was still having the same problems. *ak

While driving, the timing belt broke. this caused the engine to turn two different ways. this caused catastrophic engine failure. the head broke as well as the pistons and rods. a new engine is now required.

Frontal air bags di not deploye when i was in accident. *ak

I purchased a new 2002 grand am, six months after purchase i brought car in for first time because of vibrations when braking at 50-60 mph, dealer had to do some work on rotors, had less than 6,000 miles!!!. brought car in again three months later with same complaint, told nothing wrong. brought car in two more times to dealer with same complain, again told nothing wrong. finally i brought car to auto shop and was told that rotors are gone, have less than 36,000 miles on car. mechanic indicated that he has had a lot of these cars coming in because of very thin rotors. i do not understand how rotors could be so worn in less than 6,000 miles and then have them be completely gone at 36,000 miles. i feel there is something wrong with rotors to begin with

Blinkers malfunction on 2002 grand am. i had to replace the multi-function switch to fix the problem. gm said that there is no recall for this item. a clicking noise from the dash indicated that the switch was bad. you had to wiggle the blinker lever to get the clicking noise to stop. the problem got worse as time progressed. *jb

Airbags din't deploy when i was in an acident. *jb

My 2002 grand am se was not accelerating. brought it to the dealer who said that the timing chain had jumped. dealer said it was my fault due to not enough oil changes and sludge in the engine. i called pontiac for assistance and was treated rudely! upon taking the grand am to another mechanic (non-dealer) it was found that the timing chain tensioner failed causing the timing chain to jump. yet the dealer did not catch this. new mechanic could not find any trace of sludge in the engine causing the problem as the dealer said. while it was in their possession, the dealer caused more damage to the engine by starting it with a broken timing chain.*ak

While driving for a little while and when turning off the engine, vehicle would not restart. vehicle was towed to the dealership. dealer inspected vehicle several times, and could not duplicate or correct the problem. *ak

I have had my car in numerous times to dealership and still have not been able to fix problem. when i travel down interstate the rpm locks in at around 2.6--every so often it will kick out and move past 3. this causes a jerking motion in car that is quite noticeable by everyone in car. i have assisted my dealership in finding the cause of this problem, by having a mechanic take if for test drives, applying scanning tool, and a data recorder to engine. i have put on over 600 miles trying to diagnosis problem. i have now been told that they really don't know what is causing the symptoms, but think it may a programming error. they state that the computer controlling the torque converter is not working properly. they state gmc has approx 13 other cars in us that is doing this, but they do not know what is causing the problem or how to fix it. they are currently working on a fix---but this may take years since any changes made, have to go through gov. in the mean time i am suppose to cont to drive this car and live with the sudden quick jerks that i get every 1-2 miles going down road, wait for the comp upgrade, and hope that this is the cause!! if not we start over. i am real frustrated with this whole process and the way this has been handled at my dealership. i want a resolution to this asap. the car only has 27,000 miles on, and should not be having this much problems. at this point i am very disappointed in my service i have received and in the whole gmc technician staff, and product. *jb

Purchased the car new in 2001. oil changed every 3,000 miles and all regular maintenance. at 40,000 miles lower intake gasket began leaking. replaced myself, followed manual precisely. upon reassembly engine began nocking. took to dealer and they cited bad lifters and replaced them.*ak

Brake pulsation when applying brakes. had vehicle at dealership six times. rotors replaced. problem blamed on over-torquing of lug nuts even though car has only been serviced at pontiac dealerships. also, car constantly "floats" from side to side and intermittent front end "clanging". six repair attempts as well. *la

Steering wheel shook when braking. took vehicle to the dealer, and dealer replaced the two front tires. however, steering wheel was still shaking so the mechanic replaced some lugs nuts. *ak

2002 pontiac grand am. 62.000 miles, repairs so far as follows. 1. front brakes replaced,rotors,pads,caliper insp,28,000 miles. 2. front brakes replaced again, rotors turned few months later. 3. intake manifold gaskets replaced.*ak 4.tires replaced due to slipping on the wheel , dealer stated this is common and not unsafe! 5. sterring rack and pinion replaced. 6. fuel pump replaced. 7. sterring alignment has always been an issue and car still pulls right. i will give the gm zone manager a oppritunity to buy back the car 23 jan 04. this car is unsafe to drive and a pain to own. there are several known issues with the grand am 107 tsb's alone and at least that many complaints, gm has a problem that needs attention asap.

This is the 2nd grand am i have owned and both times the intake gasket has started leaking the first on started leaking at 74.000 miles and my new one started leaking at 30.000 miles... what is wrong with the gaskets the first one was a 1999 and the new one is a 2002. *cb

I have had to replace the front rotors on my car 2 times and don't even have 30000 miles on it. yet, i bought it brand new with bad rotors, and now it did it again, and my mechanic has told me he has had several vehicles with the same issue. i took it to the dealer, and they replaced the rotors. very nosey brakes, and when sitting still it was almost like a light vibrating.*ak

I have had my car in the shop several times for problems and they can typically replicate the problem, but cannot fix it. i have had 3 brake jobs on my car, as well as the calipers rebuilt, and my brakes still do not work right. the abs system fails constantly. i experience slides on dry surfaces even. i also have transmission, coolant, and fueling problems. i have had a fuel pump replaced finally, after the 3rd time of taking it in for not starting, 2 times prior there was nothing supposedly wrong. also, i am still getting only 125 miles on a tank of gas. they an reciprocate the problem but will not fix it. i also keep getting a low coolant and check engine message lights but they say nothing wrong. the power windows also drag and make marks on the window surfaces. they are very slow rolling up. the light in the radio area fades in and out, and the radio goes off and on alot as well as only the front speakers work primarily. back do not. accelerator pedal sticks, and causes car to rev up to 5000 rpms very scary!*ak

Goodyear and pontiac have had issues with tires that were installed on the grand am gt since 1999. there is a problem with the rain grove that cuases the tires to slowly become defective by causing a rubbing situation. no recall issued and will only replace two front tires since the issue starts there. will only replace other two defective tires if they get rotated and this happens under warranty.*ak

Problems with suspension and power steering.*mr in addition, failed suspension. inspected vehicle for popping type of noise when turning right at low speeds, such as parking lot turns. vehicle was at dealership once for power steering system and four times for suspension. consumer feels she's entitled to another vehicle or compensation for a "lemon" calculated in accordance with the lemon law. *ph

While driving timing chain broke, causing vehicle to stall.*ak

Issue concerns tsb 02-03-10-003. the vehicle is 2002 pontiac grand am gt with aluminum alloy wheels and 16 inch eagle rsa tires. the vehicle has 41,000 miles and is not under warranty. prior to oct. 3 2003 - a scrunching and grinding noise in the front part of the vehicle that sounds like a wheel bearing or brake assembly went bad. decided that the problem was bad enough to take to local dealership. the dealership determined that cause was combination of the stock aluminum wheel and the stock goodyear rsa tire described in tsb 02-03-10-003 and that they were unable to repair the problem without replacing the tires. the decision was if i wanted the problem fixed, i have to pay for 4 new tires. i brought 3 issues to the attention of the dealer: 1. this is a safety issue because any other mechanical failures of a similar sound will not be heard over the current sound and therefore be left unchecked until a time when the part could fail catastrophically. 2. it is a safety issue for the reason that under pressure or heat deviating from the norm as a result of the tire and rim rubbing in such a way to cause the sound. 3. it would be very difficult to resell a vehicle that was unsafe. for these three reasons i requested that the dealership pay for the repairs. they said that they did not have the power to make that decision and that i should contact the manufacturer. oct. 3 2003 i contacted pontiac customer assistance and spoke to merrill hammond concerning the problem. she said that pontiacs position is that the car is operating within normal and acceptable parameters and did not have to pay for the repair since it was not a safety recall. told that if i had brought the car in under warranty, new tires would have been put on the car by the manufacturer. she suggested i contact the nhtsa if i was unhappy with the safety issues concerning tsb. i feel the car is unsafe and that a recall should be issued for the tire combination stated in the tsb. *la

2002 pontiac grandam gt-1 has continuous grinding, rubbing, and popping sounds from the front steering. also has uncontroled power steering where the car could go off the road. dealerships can or will not try to find these serious defects, they say that it is the tires that is causing these defects.this is the second new gt-1 within the past three years with the same defects that i have owned.

While driving at 5 mph the vehicle experienced sudden acceleration and crashed into a tree. as a result there was damage to the front of the vehicle. the dealer was notified. *ak the incident occurred as the consumer pulled out of the parking space. the inspection revealed no failure on any parts to cause rapid acceleration. the cruise control was possibly activated due to the location which was very close to the steering wheel. *scc *jb

Consumer states that while driving at any speed and with no warning vehicle will shut off, causing consumer to pull over. it will be hard to get the vehicle back started.dealer notified.*ak

While driving at 45 mph, the vehicle shut down and would not start again. the vehicle was towed to the nearest dealer. the dealer inspected the vehicle and could not duplicate or correct the problem. *ak the ses (service engine soon) light was intermittent, the day lights were inoperative and the dealer could not duplicate. the solution was a loose fuel cap seal. when the vehicle didn't start, the solution was reprogramming the engine control module. on another occasion when the vehicle didn't start the ignition switch was replaced. the rpm dropped/stalled and was diagnosed as no fuel pump pressure and the sender fuel pump/fuel tank unit was replaced. the vehicle experienced a hard start where the problem wasn't diagnosed and the solution was to place the washer on the ground wire. while driving, all the lights had come on, no power was sent to the gas pedal, the vehicle felt like it was in neutral, the speedometer registered, the gas gauge registered the fuel followed by the engine surging. (nothing registered the rpms) *scc *jb

Consumer stated that the windows are very difficult to roll up. vehicle has been taken to the dealer, and work has been done to alleviate the problem, but of no avail. manufacturer has been notified of the problem as well.*ak

Consumer stated they were having problems with brake drums. dealer notified. *ak

When the brakes were depressed, the tires locked up, and the vehicle hydroplaned like it was on a wet surface.*ak the seat back falls down upon acceleration when driving. *ts. the consumer felt the abs was not performing as designed. the seat collapsed while driving, and the front rotors were resurfaced. *jb

Car has not started on four different occasions. the first about a year ago. the last three were within the last two weeks. all within one week. the starter cranks the engine, but the engine will not start. on the first incident the "quick fix" worked. that is turn the ignition switch on for 15 minutes then try again. the car was driven to dealer but no problem found. the last three times the car was towed to dealer. all three times no problem found. the ignition switch was replaced on the second occasion, the crank sensor was replaced on the third, nothing replaced on fourth. dealer says they understand our concern. *nlm

I purchased a brand new pontiac grand am gt1 in july 2002. shortly after, i noticed that it was hard starting. usually the third time started in one day, it would sound like it was turning over but nothing happened. i would shut it off and try again and it would work. took it to the dealer where i purchased it, they kept it for 4 hours while i waited. told me nothing was found. immediately went to my car to start it and it did the same thing. went back in, told the mechanic it just happened. they checked it again and came up with nothing. no repairs done. the fog lamps stay on when the car is off. at least once a week my neighbor calls me to tell me my lights are on. i have to start the car and toggle the switch until they go out. a few hours later they are back on and the switch is in the off position. when closing the windows, there is a scratching sound. both windows in the rear are scratched. the car is clean and was checked by another mechanic who found nothing inside the door that would cause the scratches. there is also a high pitched sound coming from the front of the car. it sounds like the wheel on the driver's side. it seems to go away when i apply the break but comes back. after it rains, there is a gurgling sound coming from the front passenger's side door. can't tell if its the speaker or what. just little things that bother me considering this is a brand new car only owned by me and well taken care of. there are just under 16,000 miles on the car. so far, no repairs done. *nlm

The parking lights stayed on after the vehicle was shut off. *jb

I was traveling about 60-70 miles per hour and lost control of my vehicle. i slammed into the guard rail. the crash totally pushed the front end of the car up towards the windshield. neither air bag came out and i had my seat belt on. i can't remember the wreck or what cause me to lose control of my car. fight for life had to fly me out and my jaw was completely shattered. i also had no bruising or injuries from my seat belt. i don't believe my seat belt restrained me either. *nlm

I have a 2002 pontiac grand am that is not so grand. at 1100 miles the transmission was replaced after fighting with pontiac. they finally authorized the dealership to drop the transmission pan and they found metal shards in it from the transmission. i had the molding around the rear window replace, both electric mirrors fixed because they get "stuck." the ignition has been replaced three times since i got the car, twice in the last 4 weeks. the key will not turn in the ignition and the steering wheel is not locked. this really affects the usage of the car. i am waiting to get stranded somewhere because the car won't start. i have spoken to a pontiac rep several times, been lied to and brushed aside. *jb

I was making a left hand turn into a parking space and my power steering went out causing me to hit the car next to me. my car has been in the shop at least 4 times to try to get the problem fixed with the power steering and they say there is no problem. yet the power steering has gone out 7 times 2 of those times causing an accident. the first accident was around 7,000$ the 2nd one was minor and estimates are being done now. *jb

Consumer leased vehicle new in 06/02. after 1 month the head gasket blew without warning while driving. dealer repaired, but incident occurred again about 3 weeks later. dealer repaired again, but gasket blew 4 months later. dealer has repaired vehicle 5x for blown head gaskets since lease. *nlm

I rented a 2003 pontiac grand am on feb. 04, 2003. it was very cold, at night, and snowing heavily. i turned on the rear defogger. it failed to clear the rear window, and i turned it on again after noticing that it had turned off. about 30 seconds later the rear window exploded; there was no projectile found. my wife, who was with me when it happened, and i believe it has to be a factory defect, and we should not be held responsible, yet we are being charged by budget, who was charged by the dealer, for the repair. *jb

When the vehicle is not start in two to three days, the electrical system is some how draining the battery. the dealer has replaced the battery on three occasions so far. they could not find the problem. the dealer stated that if the vehicle is not started within ten days, the battery will lose its charge. when the problem occurs, the remote locks will not work. there is no power to any of the instrument panels. car will not start. *jb

The vehicle is a 2002 pontiac grand am se1 sedan with the ecotec 2.2l engine. i was driving on the highway there was some snow and maybe a slight amount of ice in areas. and the car infront of me lost control. in order to avoid hitting it i had to make a sharp left hand turn. while making this left hand turn i had my power steering dissengage. my dashboard lights all then lit up and the engine and all the vehicles power went dead. i ended up going off the road and was airborne and came flying down into the metal highway divider. causing severe damage to the front end of my car and minor damagein the rear. the airbags did not deploy and there were no serious injuries. this however has occured now 4 times in this vehicle since purchase. the dealership stated twice before the accident "can not duplicate owners concern" and sent me away with no work performed. i then contacted pontiac customer assistance center before the accident and they didnt offer any help either.

While driving 40 mph, the right knuckle separated causing the right wheel to break and turn onto its side while on the highway. the capability of steering was gone and there was no way to control the vehicle. as a result, the car turned over onto its top in a ditch. this accident totaled the vehicle.

Consumer called complaining about having problems with brakes. also stated that the front brakes have been change between seven to eight on a period of eight months. dealer was contacted and stated that there is nothing wrong with the brakes but the master cylinder the calipers the brake hose and the problem still there. ts

I have a 2002 pontiac grandam gt. i purchased it in the end of 2001. within my car reaching 10000 miles there were problems with it. the car started to overheat and there were performance problems. after taking it in i was told the the intake manifold need to be replaced and it was on back order. they finally replaced the manifold after two weeks. but the car has not performed the same. the car still slightly overheats and the dealership mentions that it is okay that the car runs slightly warm. and at time i smell the coolant when the car is running. i feel that if the manifold was fixed then there shouldn't be any other problems with the car. i also found out that alot of other gm vehicles are having problems with there manifold. i feel that after the warntee is over that the car will have problems later.

Consumer states the vehicle was involved in a frontal collision with a tree at 30-35 mph impact and neither air bag deployed. manufacturer has been notified. feel free to provide any further information.*jb

Vehicle was involved in a frontal collision with a retainer wall at 55 mph. upon impact neither air bag deployed. the manufacturer was notified. *jb consumer was in the fast lane and hit the retaining wall, then turned the wheel to the right to get control and then back left where at that point the vehicle straightened and went head first into the cement retaining wall. the consumer locked both arms holding the steering wheel, and braced himself upon impact. *scc

Driver's seat belt is designed in a way that it cannot be adjusted on frame of vehicle, when worn it goes across driver's neck.*ak consumer also stated the driver side door closes on its own after being opened when on an incline, consumer also stated the tire experienced a flat.*jb

Vehicle shut down while traveling on highway without prior warning. dealership is aware of problem. *ak also the drivers power seat is inoperable at times, it makes a grinding noise, and at times would not move at all, there was a pulsation when brakes were being applied, brakes were replaced and the rotors were resurfaced, starter was replaced, there was a clunking nosie when driving straight or making turns, the dome light fell off, trunk is hard to close, consumer has to slam trunk to get it to close, the dealer found the latch out of adjustment, when starting vehicle there is a noise from the engine area, there was a noise coming from the wheel area, dealer could not duplicate consern, alternator was replaced, vehicle stalled, delaer replaced fuel sending unit, the clock radio was loosing time, the remote keyless entry will only work when consumer is close to the vehicle, the windows were making a scratching noise when being rolled up, the air conditon has an odor, steering wheel has a mild vibration when driving.*jb

I took my car to marc miller pontiac to have the turn signals fixed. the emergency flasher on the dash kept clicking and the turn signals would work periodically. the turn signals finally went out. the incident i am referring to is gm service bulletin 04098a. i can't understand if this applies to my 2002 pontiac grand am. i was charged for this a total of $314.17 and am not sure if it was a recall. *tr

Turn signal switch appears to be failing - something gm addressed on earlier model vehicles and across a wide range of gm vehicles. turn signal switch appears to continue to operate even after the turn signal is returned to it's off position. clicking is random and usually very fast - likely the result of current arcing given earlier recalls regarding the turn signal and hazzard light switch. gm has issued a recall for this on earlier vehicles. often referred to by owners as "nervous blinker syndrome." dealer plans to charge $250 to fix despite recalls on earlier models.

While driving at 50 mph the vehicle stalled without warning. consumer had vehicle towed. the dealership ran a diagnostic on the vehicle, and indicated that the fuel pump and main computer needed to be replaced. please provide more details. ts

In 2003 i had the exhaust manifold replaced because the car was leaking anti freeze. short time later i had the entire exhaust system replaced because anti freeze got into the exhaust system and engine was burning too hot into the catalytic converter. this plugged the converter causing the car to lose power since there was no where for the exhaust to go. work was covered by warranty/work completed in california. i was told that the very minute i smell the rotten egg smell that this would mean that the exhaust manifold seal was leaking again. 8/2005...just had the exhaust manifold seal replaced for secont time. car is now at 85k. have extended warranty too 100k. i had the car out for a week and again the smell is back. i see from this site that there are many of us out there that have suffered the same problem. if the problem is recurring then gm should have to pay to fix it even after the extended warranty period. 8/2005...

My wife and sister in law were in a head on accident yesterday in which both were wearing there seatbelts and the other driver passed out and came across the center line and hit them head on each were doing approximately 35mph, and neither one of the airbags deployed. the driver of the other cars airbag deployed.*ak

Car purchased new. parking brake failed at 362 miles and 4670 miles. brake will not engage and release button is loose. brake failed suddenly both times.*ak

I am filing this complaint not because of a failure that has occurred with my vehicle, but soley a safety concern. i have a brand new pontiac grand am gt 2 door coupe. i have noticed that the front seat belts ride abnormally high on the shoulder, impinging in the neck. upon inspection of the seat belt unit, i noticed a design flaw that i feel could cause serious neck injuries when in a collision. the seat belt on this car has a guide which is mounted between the headrest and the backrest of the seat. this guide extends from the top portion of the backrest to about the mid section of the headrest (estimate of 4-5" total height). this guide is where the seat belt runs through, placing the shoulder harness in the proper position. however, there is a major problem with this design. this guide is so large, that it does not guide the seat belt over the shoulder in the proper position. for this reason, the seat belt sits high on the shoulder, partly on the neck. i am a normal sized male adult, so this problem definitely should not occur. i noticed that on previous years of grand am's that this seat belt guide is smaller in size, thus guiding the seat belt to the proper position. i fear that if i were to be in an auto accident, this seat belt would cause serious cervical spinal cord damage. i contacted the dealership and requested that the problem be fixed. the dealership denies that there is a problem and has not offered a solid solution. i suggested that they replace the guide with a smaller one from a previous model, but refuse to do so stating that the vehicle warranty would be void. i have also contacted pontiac at 1800 pm cares. my complaint has been documented and i highly doubt that they will do anything with it. this is why i dedided to file this complaint. being a fiirefigter/paramedic, i see a huge potential for injury due to this design flaw. i hope that you are able to research this complaint and enforce a proper resolution.*ak

Had front & rear wheel alignment done 3 times in the may 2002 with no correction done to correct the problem of the pulling back & forth from side to side and keeping the car to stay on the road.this has started to wearing down my tires at a accelrated rate, which may have to be replaced.fuel injection system is making the car idle very rough while sitting/parked.*ak

April 1, 2002, i bought a new car, a 2002 pontiac grand am gt between 12 pm and 2 pm, about 4 pm i was on the expressway on i55 going northbound, during the thunder storm we had with rain and snow and even some sleet. at that time i had the windshield wipers on "hi" and proceeded very cautiously on the road, at that given time, i had heard a snap and the windshield wipers stopped dead in there tracks in the middle of the windshield, i had to pull over on the shoulder of the expressway to regain control of the car, as the weather was really bad. from there, i took the car back to pontiac to have it serviced, alonzo greene (salesman) informed me that the mechanics had gone home for the day and to come back tomorrow, after disputing with him, a $24,000 car should not have done this, he told me that there was nothing he can do, the next day i went back to pontiac to have the car serviced and was told that nothing was wrong, took the car back home and a couple of days later, yet the same problem happened again. i took the car back to pontiac, the mechanics said there was nothing wrong with and when they contacted general motors, gm stated not to replace any parts on the car, unless there was a recall or there is going to be a recall, no satisfaction from the mechcanics or pontiac, sally from the pontiac corporation had been contacted, she spoke with me and told me that the car was not to leave the lot until the wipers were fixed, she wanted to speak with a mechanic, she spoke with jerry, jerry walked away out of sight with the phone, jerry put me back on the phone with sally , sally told me to take the car, it was fine, i asked her, "what should happen, if god forbid i am in a car accident due to wiper failure and someone is hurt or killed"? and sally said with an attiude "you have insurance and full coverage, you are covered if it does". bottom line, gm, the service garage, and pontiac refuse to repair the car or to give me a new car, its under warranty. nlm

The back doors have opened while driving. consumer took the vehicle to the dealership to have repairs made. they couldn't find anything wrong with it. the door latches were cleaned but still nothing was found. consumer has a 4 month old baby who's car seat is next to the door and the door opened again. the problem still hasn't been resolved. *jg
