2014-03-07	ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE	The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have ‘US9377’ stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail. Remedy: Gates will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump, free of charge. The recall began during May 2014. Owners may contact The Gates Corporation at 1-303-744-1911.
2009-04-07	EXTERIOR LIGHTING	SABERSPORT IS RECALLING 16,270 COMBINATION CORNER AND BUMPER LAMP ASSEMBLIES OF VARIOUS PART NUMBERS SOLD FOR USE AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES. THESE HEADLAMPS FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, “LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT.” THESE LAMPS DO NOT CONTAIN THE REQUIRED AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS. Remedy: SABERSPORT WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER A FULL REFUND FOR THE NONCOMPLIANT COMBINATION LAMPS. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 11, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SABERSPORT AT 1-909-598-7589.
2008-08-11	EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS	K2 MOTOR IS RECALLING 1,921 AFTERMARKET HEADLAMPS OF VARIOUS MODELS SOLD FOR USE ON THE ABOVE LISTED VEHICLES. THESE HEADLAMPS ARE MISSING THE AMBER SIDE REFLEX REFLECTOR WHICH FAILS TO CONFORM WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, “LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT.” Remedy: K2 MOTOR WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER A FULL REFUND. One of two structural cables that hold the receiver end of the driver’s seat belt in place has broken, presumably making the belt useless in thew event of a crash. A wire that runs between the two cables has also broken. I am told the wire governs the light that notifies of an air bag problem.

History: As long as a couple of years ago, the outer plastic housing that covers the belt latching mechanism broke. For esthetics only, I “repaired” this plastic part by using duct tape. On 8 November 2014 my wife who is the primary driver of the vehicle asked me to look at the belt because the end of it was flopping around. I examined it and found that one of the two cables leading up to the latch receiver mechanism was completely severed. On the following day I contacted Volkswagen of America, described the problem and asked that they authorize replacement of the belt. The customer service representative said that since the car was out of all warranties she could not authorize the repair. I made the argument that unlike other vehicle equipment, the seat belt and other safety mechanisms should operate as intended for the life of the vehicle, no matter how long. I further argued that the belt had been used only as intended and that there was nothing in the owner’s manual to inform me that the belt required any special maintenance or attention. Had any such ongoing maintenance been required, I said I would have certainly made sure that it was done. The representative informed me that there was no recall related to the seat belt of this vehicle and to her knowledge no one else had reported a similar problem. She assured me the problem would be officially noted. At this point the representative put me on hold to consult with a superior. After several minutes she returned to the phone and informed me that the problem could not be diagnosed over the phone and that I would need to take it in to an authorized dealer. I immediately contacted the dealer at which I had purchased the vehicle in 1999, Rudy Luther Burnsville Volkswagen of Burnsville, MN and arranged an appointment for 11 November 2014. I took the car to the dealer at the appointed time. The car was brought into the service area immediately. After an hour and fifteen minutes, service representative Sandy Fuller informed me that they had been in contact with Volkswagen of America and were informed that they could not be of any assistance in resolving the matter at no cost to me. At my request, Ms. Fuller took pictures of the problem belt and kept them on file. (I did not see the pictures.) I consulted with the service manager named Jason who confirmed that was the case. Jason informed me that VW had replaced belts beyond warranty when the belt had worn near the shoulder. He said he had not seen a problem such as mine before. He speculated (but did not put in writing) that the problem was caused because a plastic sleeve which reinforced the cables near the latching mechanism had slipped down, allowing the cables to wiggle back and forth and eventually causing the breakage. He confirmed the matter was out of his hands without authorization of the company. I was informed (not in writing) that replacement and installation of a belt would cost about $350 and that the part would have to be ordered. I declined going forward with the repair. Upon my return home I recontacted Volkswagen of America, gave the representative the case number (140811619) and informed that my request for repair had been turned down. I asked if there was any mechanism for further internal appeal. He said there was not.
